can someone give me a brief explanation of what ‘anisomax’ in adaptmesh means? I’m assuming that it’s a measure of the anisotropy of the mesh?

Yes, the anisotropy a a triangle is given where \xi is a direction and K the simplex, dans B_K the linear part of affine transformation go from \hat{K} to K where \hat{K} is the equilateral simplex of size 1.
h_{K,\xi} = \frac{ || \xi||}{||B_{K}^{-1}\xi||}.
