It has been some years since I’ve seen any updates on the development of an AD framework in FreeFEM. Obviously, this powerful feature is a huge undertaking, but I am curious whether any developers are currently working on it.

Hello Chris,  
it is not a AD framework in FreeFEM, but maybe AutoFreeFem is of interest for you.

The goal is the rapid development of simulations and optimization problems in FreeFEM and its documentation. In particular there is no need to compute linearizations/derivatives of non-linear problems by hand.
